Progress in Karate

A grading (examination) is the method of assessing progress of a karateka (student) in the art of Shotokan.

Shodan Award

  • Gradings are held regularly and karateka proficiency in each of Shotokan’s 3 elements, Kihon, Kata and Kumite will be tested.
  • The degree of proficiency expected will be dependent upon which level of learning a karateka has reached.
  • Beginner’s starting Shotokan training and reaching the required standard for their first grading will depend on the individual’s ability and attendance record but will never be less than 12 weeks.
  • WSKC gradings are officiated by senior IJKA Sensei.
